Rock n Roll With Your Kids and Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights!

rock n roll

Joanie and her Nightlights ride the Subway, get a Library Book, and enjoy some good Pizza in their new eclectic collection, Brooklyn Baby! Each song takes you by surprise with its tempo, style, and lyrics. You never know what you’re gonna get and we love it! They bring the tempo down with the soft sounds and lovely lyrics in Brooklyn Baby and Love is Love. Their messages of love, acceptance, and world peace make this CD one of our all time favorites. Well done, Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights. We appreciate you.

Thank you to Waldmania PR for our complimentary copy in exchange for this review. Brooklyn Baby is available this Friday May 19th!

“From her roots as a theater major and performer in the hip clubs of New York City, Joanie Leeds has proved herself as a major talent in the field of children’s music.”

“THE BEST KIDS’ ALBUMS NOW!  Leeds and her band bring big fun on their new release.  Don’t attempt a family road trip without this minivan-friendly winner.”
— People magazine

NEW YORK — Six years ago, award-winning singer/songwriter Joanie Leeds packed her bags and moved from Manhattan’s Upper West Side to the vibrant, artistic neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Here she found not only a place to start a family, but also a magnificent melting pot metropolis that offered dazzling adventures on a daily basis.  Inspired by her love for all things Brooklyn, Joanie will release her eighth family album, Brooklyn Baby!, on May 19.

Produced by Jesse Lauter (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Elvis Perkins, Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket), Brooklyn Baby! is a real genre-bender, containing elements of folk, Southern rock, hip hop, pop and punk presided over by a singer whose sheer command of vocal artistry is second to none.

Songs about the park system (“Ferry Nice”), public transportation (“Subway”) and Brooklyn’s most famous dish (“Pizza”) are a given, but the heart of the album embraces both a Brooklyn mentality and sentimentality with love (“Love is Love”), thirst for education (“Library Book”), healthy eating (“Apples in My Apples”), and Yiddish expressions (“Shayne Punim”). The album closes with Joanie’s take on Brooklyn-born Lou Reed’s gentle tune, “Sunday Morning.”

Gifted with a soulful, “rock solid” voice that ranges from low and bluesy to high, light, and breezy, Joanie Leeds is an exceptionally versatile artist who brings serious musicianship to the table right alongside a terrific sense of fun and fashion.  Says SiriusXM’s Kids Place Livehost Mindy Thomas, “Joanie Leeds is that cool babysitter who would let you try on her lip gloss once your mom left the house.  You idolized her, and your mom knew she could trust her.  That’s Joanie.  Only she’s also likely to completely ROCK THE ROOF OFF YOUR HOUSE!”

Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights have performed in dozens of cities nationwide at such prominent venues as The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, The Smithsonian, the CMAs, the Hang Out Festival, Symphony Space, Wolf Trap, and LA’s Skirball Center.

Joanie Leeds’ original kids’ music won first place in the USA Songwriting Competition, as well as winning an Independent Music Award, Parents’ Choice® Gold Award, NAPPA Gold Award, and Family Choice Award, and Joanie was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and the International Songwriting Competition.  Joanie’s music has been highly praised in People magazine, Parents Magazine, The New York Times and The Washington Post.  Her tunes are played on many radio stations nationwide and have climbed the chart to #1 on SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live and WXPN’s Kids Corner. Joanie is also a PJ Library musician!

Prior to Brooklyn Baby!, Joanie Leeds released seven critically acclaimed, full-length albums and two full-length DVDs, in addition to numerous videos on her Youtube channel.  She is currently at work on more music videos, while maintaining a busy teaching and performance schedule.

Brooklyn Baby! will be available online at www.joanieleeds.com, Amazon, iTunes, CDBaby, TuneCore, and other related digital outlets.

Wake Up and Sing!

Wake up and sing with Red Yarn!

 wake up
Maybe my daughter can now be an honorary member of the ‘Yarnies”. We love Red Yarn’s music and will continue to stomp our feet and clap our hands right along with Andy! Our favorites are I Had a Rooster and Clap Your Hands. We can’t wait to share Molly Cottontail with our 2 year old friend, Molly. We know she will love it too!
Be sure to check out his latest music video of Beautiful Day on YouTube. It reminds my daughter of her morning song at pre-school and it is adorable!
Here is more information for you from Sugar Mountain PR:
Red Yarn recently launched the popular Family Ramble concert series in Portland. At the Ramble in April, he’ll debut Wake Up & Sing, an album of sunny songs about childhood play, animal adventures, and parenting.

Wake Up & Sing is an homage to Furgeson’s favorite old children’s records and songbooks, as well as to the great American folk canon championed by Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and other bards.

In March 2015, Furgeson made a pilgrimage to the Hudson River Valley to see the environments that inspired some of his musical heroes, from Seeger’s Clearwater to The Band’s Big Pink house in Woodstock. Furgeson spent two days at GRAMMY Award winning producer Dean Jones’ No Parking Studio (in Rosendale, NY), intending to record a six-song EP. Jones coaxed out 12 songs, as Furgeson dug deep into his notebooks of folksong adaptations and rhymes he’d written for his young son. Over the next year, Furgeson and Jones bounced tracks back and forth, crafting 11 of them into a full-length album.

Wake Up & Sing refines the lush and lively folk-rock sound Red Yarn established with his two earlier Deep Woods albums. Furgeson’s rootsy vocals, driving guitar and banjo work, and tight harmonies with his wife Jessie Eller-Isaacs, are still on display, but each song is reframed within Jones’ strange and whimsical sonic palette. The sound is rounded out by Jones’ drumming, Jed Greenberg’s bass and fiddle, as well as guest appearances by 2016 GRAMMY Award nominee Morgan Taylor (Gustafer Yellowgold), Portland kindie mainstay Mo Phillips, and Jane Scarpantoni on cello (REM, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen). Furgeson’s longtime collaborator Ryan Bruce created bright linocut prints for the album artwork, echoing the simple designs of old Folkways records by Seeger and Guthrie.

Dedicated to his “little Yarnies” – the Portland preschoolers for whom he has performed on an almost daily basis for the last four years – Wake Up & Sing shows a bright and kind-hearted side of this rising family music star.

Sunday Sweetness: Itsy Bitsy Spider

I found this gem for some Sunday sweetness while searching through old videos with Emma. These are handmade props which I tried to perfect, market, and sell, but I gave up. Maybe someday I’ll revisit that project!

Emma gets a kick out of seeing her former self. I just get nostalgic and weepy.

DVD Review: “Big Block Singsong”

Thank you to Sugar Mountain PR for my complimentary copy of Big Block Singsong, Season 1, in exchange for this review and announcement.

On May 25th, Season 2 of Big Block Singsong will debut on Disney TV. We’ve got Season 1 and we can’t wait for the fun to continue. These cute little guys are true to their name. I suppose you could call them a bunch of block heads. But they have such talent! They sing cute songs, wear funny disguises, and teach some valuable lessons. Whatever it is, it works for my daughter, and she loves to sing along!

Here you see her jamming to “I’m not right-side up; I’m upside-down!” and “I’m up-high… now I’m down-low!” She also enjoys “You brush them all around, you brush them up… and down!” and “What do you see? Hair!”dvd review

These sweet and square characters teach about emotions, diversity, hygiene, animals/insects, body parts and much more. They’re fun, energetic, and downright cute. Be there or be square…sing along with Big Blocks!
